General Meeting of the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation Sustained growth for promising development of golf in Morocco

The Royal Moroccan Golf Federation “RMGF” held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the year 2023 on Tuesday July 16.

Convened by His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, President of the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation, the meeting was chaired by the 1st Vice-President, Mr Mustapha Zine.

At the opening of the meeting, Mr Zine read out the address of His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, who began by recalling the importance attached by the RMGF to national solidarity during difficult times, and in particular the action of the RMGF, as a civic institution, which contributed to the national effort to support the victims of the earthquake in the El Haouz region.

On the sporting front, His Royal Highness praised the performances of the national teams at international competitions. In 2023, the RMGF’s elite golfers represented Morocco remarkably well at the World Amateur Team Championship (WATC), where the men’s and women’s selections achieved their best-ever performances in the competition, both finishing in the top 25. At regional level, Morocco consolidated its leadership by winning all the categories in which our young representatives took part at the Pan Arab Ladies and Juniors Championship.

His Royal Highness’s speech also highlighted the RMGF’s ongoing efforts to promote youth sport, with a significant increase in the number of young licensees, which has tripled in the space of 2 years. This increase is the fruit of the federation’s development strategy, which focuses on involving clubs in the opening of golf schools and the implementation of golf in school sports in collaboration with the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports.

Overall, the total number of licensed golfers rose by a significant 25% in 2023. Thanks to the efforts of the RMGF and the golfing ecosystem, Morocco has taken up the challenge of rejuvenating the national golfing cohort, with the proportion of young people rising from 18% in 2021 to 40% of licensees in 2023.

His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid also emphasized the importance of training sports managers, stressing that this was a federal priority with a view to sustaining sporting performance. To this end, training courses in partnership with PGA of America, PGA France, the French Golf Federation and the OFPPT have been launched and will continue in 2023, to strengthen the human capital and skills of the Moroccan golf ecosystem.

In his speech, His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid emphasized sustainable development initiatives. To this end, the Federation has entered into a partnership with the Ministry of the Interior to help clubs connect all golf courses to wastewater treatment plants by 2027. This eco-responsible commitment illustrates His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid’s desire to urge golf clubs to preserve natural resources for the sustainable practice of golf in Morocco.

In conclusion, His Royal Highness emphasized the role of the golf ecosystem as a “catalyst for the development of tourism in our country, thanks, among other things, to the high international profile of our destination, and the economic and social spin-offs that this brings”, and reminded the audience that “our country will be represented for the third consecutive year at the Olympic golf competition in Paris next month. After Maha Haddioui, it’s Ines Laklalech’s turn to carry our country’s flag high.
